BOOK REVIEW!!! The Heart of a Hussar (The Winged Warrior Series, Book 1) by Griffin Brady #HistoricalFiction #PolishWingedHussars #BlogTour @griffbrady1588

⭐⭐⭐⭐

Poland during the 17th century is a place and time period that I know little about. In fact, I didn’t know what the winged hussars were until I read this book. It is a period in time that I have never come across in fiction before, and so I was very excited to learn more about the history this book contained.

Jacek DÄ…browski is a winged hussar, a part of a cavalry unit, who finds himself both promoted and in conflict at the same time. Becoming a lieutenant gives him more opportunities, a better title, and he is one step closer to getting the lands that he so desires. Unfortunately, the captain, Mateusz, has it out for Jacek, and works against him, rather than with him.

Oliwia’s only goal is to protect her younger brother, Filip. When Jacek, enemy to Oliwia and Filip, saves them, something within Jacek changes. Slowly, over the course of the novel, as Oliwia grows into a woman and Jacek’s military career progresses, they begin to have feelings for each other, although neither of them seem to realise it at first. And, when they do, there appears to be too much happening for them to have a happily ever after.

This book is a mix of action packed scenes and a slow building romance between two characters who are easy to fall in love with. This book screams historical accuracy, and as you read, it is incredibly clear that a lot of work and research has gone into writing this book. The writing will pull you in, and you absolutely will not be able to put this book down. You do not need to be an expert on the era to keep up with what is going on, and with such well crafted characters, you almost live, rather than read, the story.

There is a cliffhanger at the end of this novel, the kind that makes you sit back, staring at the last page in disbelief that it has been left, and that you cannot keep reading. It is the kind of book that makes you absolutely desperate to read book 2.

Poland is at war.
He must choose between his lifelong ambition and his heart.

Exploiting Muscovy’s Time of Troubles, Poland has invaded the chaotic country. Twenty-two-year-old Jacek DÄ…browski is an honorable, ferocious warrior in a company of winged hussars—an unrivaled, lethal cavalry. When his lieutenant dies in battle, Jacek is promoted to replace him, against the wishes of his superior, Mateusz, who now has more reason to eliminate him.

Jacek dedicates his life to gaining the king’s recognition and manor lands of his own. Consequently, he closely guards his heart, avoiding lasting romantic entanglements. Unscathed on the battlefield, undefeated in tournaments, and adored by women eager to share his bed, Jacek has never lost at anything he sets out to conquer. So when he charges toward his goals, he believes nothing stands in his way.

Upon his return from battle, Jacek deviates from his ordinarily unemotional mindset and rescues enemy siblings, fifteen-year-old Oliwia and her younger brother, Filip, from their devastated Muscovite village. His act of mercy sets into motion unstoppable consequences that ripple through his well-ordered life for years to come—and causes him to irretrievably lose his heart.

Oliwia has her own single-minded drive: to protect her young brother. Her determination and self-sacrifice lead her to adopt a new country, a new religion, and a new way of life. But it’s not the first time the resilient beauty has had to remake herself, for she is not what she appears to be.

As Jacek battles the Muscovites and Tatars threatening Poland’s borders for months at a time, Oliwia is groomed for a purpose concealed from her. All the while, Mateusz’s treachery and a mysterious enemy looming on the horizon threaten to destroy everything Jacek holds dear.

BOOK SPOTLIGHT!!! Under the Emerald Sky (The Irish Fortune Series, Book 1) by Juliane Weber #HistoricalRomance #IrishHistory #BlogTour @Writer_JW @maryanneyarde

Under the Emerald Sky
(The Irish Fortune Series, Book 1)
By Juliane Weber

He’s come to Ireland to escape his past. She’s trying to run from her future.

It's 1843 and the English nobleman Quinton Williams has come to Ireland to oversee the running of his father’s ailing estate and escape his painful past. Here he meets the alluring Alannah O’Neill, whose Irish family is one of few to have retained ownership of their land, the rest having been supplanted by the English over the course of the country's bloody history. Finding herself drawn to the handsome Englishman, Alannah offers to help Quin communicate with the estate’s Gaelic-speaking tenants, as much to assist him as to counter her own ennui. Aware of her controlling brother’s hostility towards the English, she keeps her growing relationship with Quin a secret – a secret that cannot, however, be kept for long from those who dream of ridding Ireland of her English oppressors.

Among the stark contrasts that separate the rich few from the plentiful poor, Under the Emerald Sky is a tale of love and betrayal in a land teetering on the brink of disaster - the Great Famine that would forever change the course of Ireland's history.

Juliane is actually a scientist. She holds degrees in physiology and zoology, including a PhD in physiology. During her studies she realised, however, that her passion lay not in conducting scientific research herself, but in writing about it. Thus began her career as a medical writer, where she took on all manner of writing and editing tasks, in the process honing her writing skills, until she finally plucked up the courage to write her first historical novel, Under the Emerald Sky. The book is the first in The Irish Fortune Series, which is set in 19th century Ireland around the time of the Great Famine.

Juliane lives with her husband and two sons in Hamelin, Germany, the town made famous by the story of the Pied Piper.

BOOK REVIEW!!! A Woman of Noble Wit by Rosemary Griggs #HistoricalFiction #HistoricalRomance #BlogTour @RAGriggsauthor @maryanneyarde

⭐⭐⭐⭐

A Woman of Noble Wit by Rosemary Griggs is an astoundingly successful book. Up until now, Katherine-Kate’s life has, like so many women, been lost to time, which is such a crying shame, as some of these women had more interesting lives than the men whose names are forever documented in history. Rosemary Griggs has given her readers an intimate and plausible story about the life of the mother of one of England’s greatest explorers, Sir Walter Raleigh.

At times this novel was raw, emotional and left me in tears. At other times it is carefree, enjoyable. As the wheel of fortune turns slowly around we witness both Katherine-Kate’s triumph and failures. This is a gripping account of an ordinary woman who is trying to do her duty as a wife and mother while dreaming about adventures that will always be denied to her because of her sex. Katherine-Kate is a very flawed yet likeable character. When her first child was born I wept, for she was so excited and then so thoroughly dejected in thinking she had failed her husband. It was of little wonder she acted as she did, although this does have long-term consequences for her daughter mental health - although such things were not discussed back then. The blinkered thinking of the period which made women little better than breeding machines was very sobering, especially when a woman was as intelligent as Katherine-Kate. She has to play the passive wife around her husband, Otho, and she has to do as she is told. There are some very distressing scenes between Katherine-Kate and Otho, although I thought the author approached these scenes with the utmost care. In fact, the subject of mental health, which affects all of the characters at some point, is approached cautiously, and perhaps if you were not familiar with mental illness you might miss the gentle hints. Otho changes from a good, if not a little insecure and bitter man, into a monster and although his actions are deplorable the author hints that not all is well with his mental health. Likewise, Rosemary Griggs take a great deal of care in depicting postnatal depression, as well as grief.

I really liked the way the author approached the depiction of the court of Henry VIII. And although we only meet King Henry once, in passing, his decisions have consequences that cannot be ignored. After all, if he sentence his own wife to death then no one was safe. The fear of the King’s temper is as threatening as the plague that ravishes the country.

This novel is, without a shadow of the doubt, one of the most compelling books I have read set in Tudor England. I might just have found my new favourite author.

Few women of her time lived to see their name in print. But Katherine was no ordinary woman. She was Sir Walter Raleighs mother. This is her story.

Set against the turbulent background of a Devon rocked by the religious and social changes that shaped Tudor England; a Devon of privateers and pirates; a Devon riven by rebellions and plots, A Woman of Noble Wit tells how Katherine became the woman who would inspire her famous sons to follow their dreams. It is Tudor history seen though a womans eyes.

As the daughter of a gentry family with close connections to the glittering court of King Henry VIII, Katherines duty is clear. She must put aside her dreams and accept the husband chosen for her. Still a girl, she starts a new life at Greenway Court, overlooking the River Dart, relieved that her husband is not the ageing monster of her nightmares. She settles into the life of a dutiful wife and mother until a chance shipboard encounter with a handsome privateer, turns her world upside down.…..

Years later a courageous act will set Katherines name in print and her youngest son will fly high.

Trigger Warnings:

Raid of the Wolves
 (Ormstunga Saga, Book 2)
By Donovan Cook

The only thing that kept him going were the voices of his ancestors, screaming for blood...

Ulf and his shield brothers are sent on a raid against an old enemy — Francia, a mighty kingdom to the south, now ravaged by civil war. During the perilous sea voyage, Ulf can only focus on one thing. He demands closure: to find the man who slaughtered his family — Griml.

A hidden enemy stalks Ulf and his warriors through Francia, striking mercilessly when they least expect it. Soon the hunters become the hunted. The Norse warriors must make the ultimate choice between defying the king or angering the gods. Both could end in fury.

Donovan Cook

Even as a young child, Donovan loved reading stories about Vikings and other medieval warriors fighting to defend their homeland or raiding in distant lands. He would often be found running around outside with nothing other than a wooden sword and his imagination.

Now older, he spends his time writing about them. His novels come from his fascination with the Viking world and Norse Mythology and he hopes that you will enjoy exploring this world as much as he did writing about it.

Born in South Africa but raised in England, Donovan currently lives in Moscow, Russia with his wife and their French Bulldog, where he works as an English tutor. When he is not teaching or writing, he can be found reading, watching rugby, or working on DIY projects. Being born in South Africa, he is a massive Springboks fan and never misses a match.

BOOK REVIEW!!! The Girl from Portofino (Girls of the Italian Resistance, Book 2) by Siobhan Daiko #HistoricalRomance #CoffeePotBookClub #BlogTour @siobhandaiko @maryanneyarde

 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Gina grew up in Portofino but moved to England after the war to raise her daughter, Hope. When she learns of her father’s death, Gina and Hope travel to Portofino for the funeral.

Hope has her future ahead of her, but Gina finds herself journeying back to the past when she is presented with a journal written by her twin sister Adele, during the war. Everyone believes that Adele betrayed her country to work with the Germans, but it turns out it was a little more complicated than that.

I think Adele was one of my favourite characters, although we only briefly meet her in Gina’s memories, the rest of the time only getting to know her through her diary. Gina was always the brave sister, putting herself out there, so when Gina left to join the Resistance, Adele wanted to do her part as well. The only issue was finding something she could do, for she wasn’t like her sister, and couldn’t pick up a gun against the Germans. This novel depicts strong women who find themselves living during an extraordinarily frightening time, and how these young women reacted to these events made this story come across as very real in the telling.

This novel does have its fair share of romance, for both sisters find themselves slowly falling in love, but it is based during a war, and both sisters find themselves fighting it, one way or another. There is violence, from both sides, and both Gina and Adele see things they would rather forget. This is not a book that romanticises war, but one that tells the truth and this, while distressing at times, has been done with great skill.

This book was completely captivating, and I found it incredibly difficult to put it down.

In 1970 Gina Bianchi returns to Portofino to attend her fathers funeral, accompanied by her troubled twenty-four-year-old daughter, Hope. There, Gina is beset by vivid memories of World War 2, a time when she fought with the Italian Resistance and her twin sister, Adele, worked for the Germans.

In her childhood bedroom, Gina reads Adeles diary, left behind during the war. As Gina learns the devastating truth about her sister, shes compelled to face the harsh brutality of her own past. Will she finally lay her demons to rest, or will they end up destroying her and the family she loves?

A hauntingly epic read that will sweep you away to the beauty of the Italian Riviera and the rugged mountains of its hinterland. The Girl from Portofinois a story about heart-wrenching loss and uplifting courage, love, loyalty, and secrets untold.
