A moving story and one I would happily read over and over again - Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt

Angela's Ashes

By Frank McCourt

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Angela's Ashes is the story of Frank McCourt as he grows up in an impoverished Irish household and a drunk father. This fascinating and deeply moving memoir had me in tears on more than one occasion. The devastating loss that Angela McCourt suffers because of the poverty and the life she is forced to live, where she cannot even guarantee a meal for her children, was utterly heartbreaking. and Frank's drunken father does nothing to ease the burden of the hardship the family face.

Frank is denied opportunity after opportunity because of his social standing - because he is poor. And yet, he is clever, and quick, and wants to learn. He also wants to earn money, to become the man of the house when his father is clearly unable to. Frank's determination that he will one day escape the Irish slums and make something of himself was humbling to witness.

This is the kind of novel that I can see myself reading again and again, not because of the hopelessness of the situation, but how Frank rose above it. This book is a fascinating insight into this era.

I picked up my copy from Waterstones
