The Unquiet Spirit
(Spirited Encounters Book 1)
By Penny Hampson

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Some books entertain you while you’re reading them. Others follow you long after you’ve turned the final page. The Unquiet Spirit by Penny Hampson firmly belongs in the second category for me. From the very beginning, I was drawn into an atmospheric, emotionally rich story that blends the supernatural with romance and personal healing in a way that feels natural, moving, and deeply satisfying.

Kate Wilson is a wonderfully relatable protagonist. Still reeling from personal loss, she relocates to Cornwall and inherits an old house that promises solitude and a fresh start — though it quickly becomes clear that the house has a history and secrets of its own. As strange events begin to unfold, I appreciated how Kate’s reactions felt genuine. She questions herself, tries to rationalize what’s happening, and shows real courage when faced with the unknown. Her emotional growth throughout the story is just as compelling as the mystery itself.

The house — old, creaking, and steeped in memory — is a standout element. It’s more than a setting; it feels alive with history and atmosphere. The author does a beautiful job of creating an uneasy yet inviting sense of place, where the past is never far from the present. I could easily imagine walking its corridors, feeling the chill of unexplained moments, and sensing the weight of unfinished business lingering in the air.

Tom Carbis is another character who surprised me in the best way. Initially reserved and guarded, he slowly reveals a depth that makes him both sympathetic and intriguing. The romance between Tom and Kate develops naturally, without rushing or melodrama. Their connection grows from shared experiences, trust, and mutual understanding, which made it feel genuine and earned. I loved how the romance never overshadowed the mystery, but instead complemented it.

What truly elevates The Unquiet Spirit is its emotional core. This isn’t just a ghost story — it’s a story about love, loss, forgiveness, and the lingering ties that bind people across time. The supernatural elements are handled with a gentle touch, creating suspense without relying on shock. Instead, the story focuses on atmosphere, emotional depth, and the idea that some spirits linger not out of malice, but because of unresolved love or sorrow.

By the time I closed the book, I felt both fulfilled and slightly bereft — always the mark of a story that truly worked for me. The Unquiet Spirit is beautifully written, emotionally engaging, and quietly powerful. If you enjoy paranormal romance with heart, strong characters, and a haunting sense of place, I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

Trigger warning: emotional abuse by partner.

She wasn’t home alone...

With her love life in tatters, Kate Wilson needs a fresh start, and where could be better than the old Cornish house that had belonged to her godmother?

There’s just one problem – it comes with a ghost as a sitting tenant.

Her grumpy new neighbour, the broodingly handsome Tom Carbis, is another fly in the ointment – he seems to turn up wherever Kate goes. His dog might be friendly, but he’s definitely not.

Then the discovery of a hidden diary points Kate to a romantic mystery with links to both Tom’s family and her house’s past – a mystery that might explain the reason for her spectral lodger.

The downside? Kate needs Tom’s help to solve it and has to convince him that she is not his foe.

But working with Tom to unravel long-buried secrets has unexpected consequences, and Kate discovers far more than she bargained for.

The Unquiet Spirit is a spooky, suspense-filled, enemies-to-lovers romance.

Penny Hampson writes mysteries, and because she has a passion for history, you’ll find her stories also reflect that. A Gentleman’s Promise, a traditional Regency romance, was Penny’s debut novel and the first of her Gentlemen Series. There are now four novels in the series, with the latest, An Adventurer’s Contract, released in November 2024. Penny also enjoys writing contemporary mysteries with a hint of the paranormal, because where do ghosts come from but the past? The Unquiet Spirit, a spooky mystery/romance set in Cornwall, is the first in the Spirited Encounters Series. Look out for A Plethora of Phantoms coming soon.

Penny lives with her family in Oxfordshire, and when she is not writing, she enjoys reading, walking, swimming, and the odd gin and tonic (not all at the same time).
